HISTORY OF OUR FLOOR COVERING STORE

Mike Robinson

Mike Robinson, 1952 - 2019

A Young Man Settles Down

The history of Robinson's Interiors is a story about a small town young man, furniture, and floor covering.

It begins about 30 miles south of Fresno in Hanford, California. In the late-60s, 15-year-old Mike Robinson, went to work for Gordon and Pat Blue who owned Hanford Furniture. For the next 14 years, Mike worked hard setting up displays, running deliveries, and making sales. He never took a vacation, and he learned a whole lot about the furniture business.

Finally, at 29, he took a vacation or what he calls the “trip of a lifetime!” Mike spent three months traveling around Europe. When he returned to Hanford, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. So he volunteered for a year at a camp for troubled boys. To support himself, he started a side business as a contractor installing draperies.

Salute

Trusting Mike

Soon people were asking Mike to do more than install draperies. They wanted him to design the draperies and order them. They also wanted him to provide carpet. People trusted Mike.

Robinson recalled, “One day, when my garage was full of carpet and my spare bedroom was full of draperies, I went down to Chinatown and rented a space. I started my floor covering business with a $35 investment and a handshake with my landlord.”

He shared one desk with his secretary and had one installer to help him. That was in 1980. That was the first location of Robinson's Interiors.

The Big City

Mike’s eldest son, Rusty Robinson, followed his father’s example and also went to work for Hanford Furniture, which later became Hanford Furniture Thomasville. He eventually became a co-owner. After many successful years in Hanford, Rusty and owner, Pat Blue, decided to expand to Fresno and open Thomasville at River Park (now Robinson's Home Furnishings).

No-Brainer Next Step

As customers purchased furniture in Rusty's store, the subject of floor covering invariably came up. It was a no-brainer for Mike Robinson to offer his decades of flooring experience within the furniture store. Mike recruited the best and most knowledgeable floor covering talent in Fresno. With the team assembled, Robinson's Interiors second location in River Park was opened to offer flooring. It was 2009. Although it was the height of the Great Recession, the Fresno store was an immediate success, exceeding all expectations. In 2022, the Fresno location became affiliated with CARPET ONE® Flooring & Home and moved to a larger location on Herndon.

Passing the Baton

In 2019, Mike passed from this life and the baton was passed to two of his sons Luke and Jake Robinson. Luke and Jake are just as committed as their father to bringing the same level of service to their customers and community.
